ReactionGrid, as an Open Simulator environment, has a number of worthwhile options for schools starting out in Virtual Worlds. We'll keep you posted with what we find out.

I've successfully used SecondLife, Meerkat (great for bringing over free resources), Hippo, and RealXTend.

Virtual Worlds are getting to be pretty exciting places to learn in - and soon enough they will operate in our browsers as well as allowing us to move between them.
