Second Classroom

Students using Virtual Worlds

Im in the final leg of testing the OpenSim for all SecondClassroom teachers and students. I am interested to hear from people how they would see this working in terms of getting students into it. Obviously we need some policy to ensure a duty of care.

The servers are running internally at my school very well, and we're in the process now of opening the various ports to allow external connection to it.

I should have 8 islands available for SecondClassroom use. I don't see there being any 'fee' for use - though the best currency will be working together to develop common resources and projects for students.

I will also have a local server version - single island - that supports 60 student accounts ready in the next couple of weeks - it will be a .zip download - and around 200mb. I would hope that as people use that to develop local area projects - that they might re-pack what they make and share it back to SecondClassroom - so others can download and use it in their classrooms.

Open for discussion - let me know what you think and how it might work best for you.

The work you are doing on this Dean is awesome, and those of us in the education community who are inspired by creativity, innovation, and a true open-source spirit are lucky indeed to have you championing OpenSim. We can't wait to give it a go!! Thanks mate!

Man...I hope I get that grant...and I may have some issues with regards to our proxy server...I am certain that you will be able to somehow show me the way...I will try not to bork this version...Will it work with Linux? I have a friend who works for a gov't agency to donate 25 Dell Gx260's...that is if our school board will accept a donation for free computers...I had to write a letter to request them to...we will build more powerful computers with them...just like you did...

You need to look at something other than Second Life Stacy. Teen Grid is 13-18 - I suggest you look at Quest Atlantis for that age range, if you don't have resources/program to teach yet. Alternatively you might look at a game - as at that age the...
