Imprudence Viewer

http://imprudenceviewer.org/ is another entry into the multi-viewer space. I've been using Meercat with Second Inventory on Reaction Grid and found it to be great for building, and as I write this, I've only just spend an hour with Imprudence. I'm using mostly OSX, and to be honest found Hippo to be frustratingly un-reliable on OSX Snow.

Online communities - are now a culture or counter-culture depending on your ideology. Community, culture, churn, sift and drift are the reagents of motivation and at the center of learning anything online.

Communities need culture to operate. Anyone talking about communities in an online wo

Texture Time

I've added some images of the 'feel' I'm trying to achieve with Judy in a transmedia story we've decided to work on. Currently lost somewhere in Photoshop and Google Documents ... and liking the flexible lighting modes in Meerkat more and more ... just sayin' Continue

Transmedia Approach to learning

I've been looking at the idea of developing sequences of work using a transmedia strategy. The idea that there are a series of modules of work, each taking place in different media. Typically, this is a tried and tested method for advertising - the target people's attention in multiple places, leading to an outcome that is desired. I wonder if an

What do teachers need in their backpack?

What is in the EdTech backpack? Is it a mobile phone, laptop, 3G dongle or a bag of virtual dirty tricks, magical potions and comforters – part operations, part strategy, part performance art. With hind-sight, I’d have created a persona online from the outset. I’d be Victor Gloucester. He’d feel confident to throw dynamite-ideas into rooms where people sit with arms folded staring into the vortex of techno-denial. He’d tell you “technology, when given to adults, presents a distinct chance that… Continue

Reaction Grid - First Meet

Thanks to Jo for putting on a first RG meet up. All seemed good until the avvie count hit 13 and then things fell over, but that I guess in the sim-spec, and certainly not a reason to pack up your prims. Joe's been dragging in huge prim builds from Second Life and re-rezzing them in Reaction Grid with success, and it seems that Meerkat is doing a pretty good job of backing up full permission SL objects and textures. I'd like to say Second lnventory is doing the same for me, but - for some reaso… Continue

Reaction Grid

Teen Second Life was a good idea, that in my view suffers from bad policy implementation and governance. Few have realized it's potential and many more have languished in aging, anecdotal stories. Open Sim offered an alternative, and in the 18 months or so it has been maturing we now see Reaction Grid among others as stable virtual spaces that perhaps offer a second wave of innovation. Policy, good or bad - requires implementation. In a virtual world, there is some over-arching policy needs, bu… Continue

Games in SL

I had an enquiry from some Chemists who have an advanced course running, looking to build a game based learning structure - I guess like a quiz; but one which gives feedback on progress, so that students can self-test and level up - or go back and get clues on what they need to know. The aim is to present a 3 tier learning system, where progress is though aligning several molecular concepts and diagrams to solve a larger problem. Does anyone have ChemEd links in SL to this kind of thing? I was t… Continue

Adopting a new world

This last week I've been dealing with a group of distance learners, getting them orientated to second life. I've never met or spoken to them, but have relied on instructional documentation and a series of easy win tasks to get them in world. So far, I've found this to be hassle free. The benefits were explained to students and even though a simple build, the students are focused and motivated. They know the orientation will improve thayer assessement performance I guess. We've learned from War… Continue

Consipircy Code - From KJs post

Link The inexorable march of gaming into education continues with this latest announcement from the Florida Virtual School (FLVS). “Conspiracy Code” is a game-based high school history course cleverly utilizing an immersive 3D virtual world. Available as a free download (PC only – sorry Mac!) the premise: “High School students will develop a deep understanding of American History as they control Eddie and Libby; fictional characters in an espionage… Continue

AU Virtual High School

Dear global teachers, Following a National ICT Symposium in which the Australian Government participated, I floated the idea of running a pilot Virtual High School, maybe 100 students - using PBL and Web2.0 - a kind of virtual New Technology High (US) Charter theory model, but used to develop 21C curriculum and pedagogy. The course would use pubic education - but open to all, using open software. It would include digital literacies etc., all the hot topics - and run by a thin administration -… Continue

Cognitive Dissonance - It's a World of Warcraft

Warning: if you like virtual worlds and problem solving, being frustrated, collaborating and staying up way too late ... then World of Warcraft might NOT be for you. It is seriously good fun, and can consume vast amounts of time. You've been warned.

Which leads me to talk a little about… Continue
