"The Far Away" in Second Life

Aussie's from Jokaydia visited, explored and played in "The Far Away" in 2008. We encountered may interesting people and discussed the extraordinary visual landscapes there. The artist behind this build chooses not to reveal his real life name. In Second Life, a 3D virtual world, he is the avatar known as, "AM Radio", and he is incredibly gifted. Below is a link to a NYTimes article from 3/5/09 titled "PortrContinue

Alternate reality games (ARGs) weave together real-world artifacts with clues and puzzles hidden virtually any place, such as websites, libraries, museums, stores, signs, recorded telephone messages, movies, television programs, or printed materials. Watching a Jokaydian 'in world' and out!

We love inspiring each other! So those Jokaydians who are attending NECC were stoked to be able to meet up with Konrad Glogowski our fellow Jokaydian whose research and thinking provides the bedrock to educators working with online tools, and in-world tools. In true Jokaydian fashion we jumped on the opportunity to stream Konrad’s presentation into Jokaydia, for our SL friends.… Continue

The difference between 'wired' kids and their teachers

In a couple of weeks our students will begin to work and play in Skoolaborate, our entry point into Teen Second Life. This week we set up all our machines, and tested the avatars that were created. Paul, a keen student, ensured that the avatars all logged in correctly. He was allowed just 5 minutes to actually see what it is like to maneuver with an avatar. This is where I was so struck by the difference between wired kids and their teachers. I have had… Continue

Slowly, but a long way to go

Unlike Dean and his excellent troupe of students, we are at the very early stages of implementing Teen Second Life. Today I created some avatars for our students who are joining Skoolaborate, and we are having our first 'meeting' tomorrow. In our school we are running Teen Second Life as a co-curricular program. The idea is to run a small project to investigate the learning opportunities for our students - and to provide some concrete informatio… Continue

ISTE's event with Konrad March

This morning I attended a fabulous ISTE presentation by Konrad Glogowski aka Konrad March at the ISTE Second Life auditorium. He spoke so well about blogging and the creation of student collaborative ventures, with teachers fostering the creation of student blogging that is personal, flexible, and not overshadowed by a 'teacherly voice'. More on this later. Jo Kay and I will put together a bit of a presentation to capture the essence of Konrad's message… Continue
