Online communities - are now a culture or counter-culture depending on your ideology. Community, culture, churn, sift and drift are the reagents of motivation and at the center of learning anything online.
Communities need culture to operate. Anyone talking about communities in an online wo

I've added some images of the 'feel' I'm trying to achieve with Judy in a transmedia story we've decided to work on. Currently lost somewhere in Photoshop and Google Documents ... and liking the flexible lighting modes in Meerkat more and more ... just sayin'

Dear Colleagues
I would like to invite you to Larry Johnson's lecture
Down the Rabbit Hole … …or how the NMC took the red pill, got a Second Life, and found love on the 3D web, on 26 November 2009 at 4.00pm at UTS. (I apologise I do not have a lecture theatre number as yet, but I will post an update).
The lecture is part of a grant project I have been carrying out with colleagues from the School of Software in IT, Nursing and the Institute for Interactive Media Learning at UTS to find o…

I've been looking at the idea of developing sequences of work using a transmedia strategy. The idea that there are a series of modules of work, each taking place in different media. Typically, this is a tried and tested method for advertising - the target people's attention in multiple places, leading to an outcome that is desired.
I wonder if an

Science is definitely not my strong point, so when I saw
Kyle G's tweet about Ninja Physics on
ReactionGrid, I assumed it would be completely beyond me!
I attended Kyle's class on the Ninja sim where I spent about 30 minutes playing, learning and creating. The Ninja Physics concept allows users to create objects that move in the same way that they would in real life. At the momen…

Our senior debate class took the
medical insurance/
citizen insurance debate online in a virtual world. The point was to simulate different plans and how they would affect the families finances.. It was really interesting to see how opinions changed as the simulation worked through the scenarios. This is a great tool…

What is in the EdTech backpack? Is it a mobile phone, laptop, 3G dongle or a bag of virtual dirty tricks, magical potions and comforters – part operations, part strategy, part performance art.
With hind-sight, I’d have created a persona online from the outset. I’d be Victor Gloucester. He’d feel confident to throw dynamite-ideas into rooms where people sit with arms folded staring into the vortex of techno-denial. He’d tell you “technology, when given to adults, presents a distinct chance that…

Thanks to Jo for putting on a first RG meet up. All seemed good until the avvie count hit 13 and then things fell over, but that I guess in the sim-spec, and certainly not a reason to pack up your prims.
Joe's been dragging in huge prim builds from Second Life and re-rezzing them in Reaction Grid with success, and it seems that Meerkat is doing a pretty good job of backing up full permission SL objects and textures. I'd like to say Second lnventory is doing the same for me, but - for some reaso…

Teen Second Life was a good idea, that in my view suffers from bad policy implementation and governance. Few have realized it's potential and many more have languished in aging, anecdotal stories. Open Sim offered an alternative, and in the 18 months or so it has been maturing we now see Reaction Grid among others as stable virtual spaces that perhaps offer a second wave of innovation.
Policy, good or bad - requires implementation. In a virtual world, there is some over-arching policy needs, bu…

Hi everyone
I am researching 5 different virtual worlds platforms and would appreciate your input. I already have the information I need regarding Second Life, although if you use Second Life, I'd be interested in your reasons why you chose it over other platforms.
The other platforms I am researching are:
Open Cobalt, Project Wonderland, Open Sim and Vastpark.
If you have user, publisher or administrator experience with any of these platforms, your responses would be immensely appreci…

I had an enquiry from some Chemists who have an advanced course running, looking to build a game based learning structure - I guess like a quiz; but one which gives feedback on progress, so that students can self-test and level up - or go back and get clues on what they need to know. The aim is to present a 3 tier learning system, where progress is though aligning several molecular concepts and diagrams to solve a larger problem. Does anyone have ChemEd links in SL to this kind of thing? I was t…
