Ive posted a short project based learning project for my 9th Grade students on
TeenSecondClassroom, and they have begun work on developing a 2 minute flick, that ultimately they will post on Machinima.com. This is a 6 week project - (1 hour per week in class, plus one hour self-directed).
I've posted the unit here, so anyone can use or modify it. It will be posted…

Innovation is all around. I've been talking to Nathan, who's been working on an Australian 'Open Simulator' grid. He's also been working up the API for user registration, which works pretty well. You can visit the Grid

Alberto Rizzo from the Melbourne Grammar school has posted this on his
blog.Part of his Youth Leadership Conference. It will be great to get some kids in there for this event from my school, and an opportunity to invite some of the staff to come along and see what is happening in Skoolaborate.

For those who've been following the development of Open Simulator, then I might suggest a powerful use for it in your classroom by students.
In brief, OS runs a 'grid' much like the SL grid. But, you can also create your own 'grid' or islands in their own right. OS does not have all the bells and whistles of SL, but has some things that SL does not too - it is Open Source so like most projects of that ilk where there is a demand, it is growing fast.
OS simply boots under the usual SL client -…

Backstory: I teach in a program called International Studies at UTS. It consists of some face to face subjects in contemporary cultures and societies and languages for three years and a fourth year when students go and study overseas in one of our partner universities. The idea is that our graduates will learn how to work and live cross and interculturally. I teach in the Italy Major.
We use a variety of not very good tools like email and Blackboard to teach students OS. It seemed only logical t…

Just to clarify. Judy and I are both working with other schools in
Skoolaborate. The images I've posted on for my build work in Teen Second Life are on the islands of Skoolaborate. Other images are largely in Jokaydia on the adult grid. Second Classroom does not have a Teen Second Life island. Several teachers in Skoolaborate are also part of this Ning Group. Any questions please message me.

We love inspiring each other! So those Jokaydians who are attending NECC were stoked to be able to meet up with Konrad Glogowski our fellow Jokaydian whose research and thinking provides the bedrock to educators working with online tools, and in-world tools.
In true Jokaydian fashion we jumped on the opportunity to stream Konrad’s presentation into Jokaydia, for our SL friends.…

PS3 - new release -
Little Big Planet building and making your own games, then getting others to play it. Watch the video - this is awesome!
The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character’s powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve – requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to expl…

Today I explored SL even further. I visited many new places and started to get more of feel of the virtual worlds. I have written a blog post on my very first experience in SL,
"Moving to a Second Life" on my blog.

Jokaydia III was a completely empty island when I first arrived and I was certain someone would have to fill it. Once again, I arrived in Second Life at the perfect time. Whenever, I go to Second Life, I always check Jokaydia. It is where I spend a large amount of my time because it is where I have met the most helpful people. My wife Joanie and our two boys went on a road trip this weekend, so I lucked out in the amount of time I could spend cavorting around with new friends in my new world. An…

After talking to Gnu Curry, I've been busy working with Dave Webber (uber network guru) to develop a strategy to provide a workable Open Sim for SecondClassroom.
There are so many opportunities for OpenSim in Education, though my strategy is to use it as part of an overall school scaffold for educators to deliver immersive worlds in the closed LAN environment as a primary goal. To this end, we are working to develop a model by which you can extract-install a sim in a LAN environment.

I was a little unsure of what I was supposed to write in this blog or any blog for that matter. So, I did what kids would do in a similar situation and I searched the site and I found a link to
Judy O'Connell's page which contained a Lee Lefever, Blogs in Plain English video. Basically what the video said was that there was a small audience with great interest in whatever it was that I had to say. So I will try to describe what has happened to me over…

In a couple of weeks our students will begin to work and play in
Skoolaborate, our entry point into Teen Second Life. This week we set up all our machines, and tested the avatars that were created. Paul, a keen student, ensured that the avatars all logged in correctly. He was allowed just 5 minutes to actually see what it is like to maneuver with an avatar. This is where I was so struck by the difference between wired kids and their teachers. I have had…

Unlike Dean and his excellent troupe of students, we are at the very early stages of implementing Teen Second Life. Today I created some avatars for our students who are joining
Skoolaborate, and we are having our first 'meeting' tomorrow. In our school we are running Teen Second Life as a co-curricular program. The idea is to run a small project to investigate the learning opportunities for our students - and to provide some concrete informatio…

Briefed the students on the PBL 'Digital Behaviour' project today. A brief introduction and discussion as to the possible ways they might explore the question, followed by a walk-through of what is expected. Have to say, they were quite shocked at what they are being asked to day, as for most (but not all), it takes them out of their comfort zone again.
All students easily joined the
Teen Ning, and selected our schools group. This is where they…

This morning I attended a fabulous ISTE presentation by
Konrad Glogowski aka Konrad March at the ISTE Second Life auditorium. He spoke so well about blogging and the creation of student collaborative ventures, with teachers fostering the creation of student blogging that is personal, flexible, and not overshadowed by a 'teacherly voice'. More on this later. Jo Kay and I will put together a bit of a presentation to capture the essence of Konrad's message…

I attended the SL Globe Theatre Event, which was and Act from Hamlet. This kind of live performance is ideal for students to produce 'drama' of any kind. Obviously this is a big SL build, however it is very possible to create simple objects and backdrops to support any kind of production. This was recorded LIVE with iShowYou, but with a little more time and effort the production quality can be improved, as can the range of camera views.
A little post editing - and you have Machinima movie happe…

This project is designed for delivery within a Project Based Learning framework.
It has been influenced heavily by the work of some of our Jokaydian friends, and so is a first step into putting a range of conversations we have had into a localised project. We hope to take this project into
Skoolaborate, if we can accommodate it in the already busy agenda.
In designing this project, we are using Teen

The Second Classroom is a project to explore ways in which educators can create projects for students using immersive media such as Second Life, MMOPRG and social networks.
Second Classroom blends Web 2.0 technologies, including, blogs, wiki’s and ‘virtual worlds’ for collaborative learning of both teachers and students. By providing a common place to learn and share ideas, educators can leverage the power of new media to engage students and provide opportunities that might otherwise not exist.
