Repeating myself

In trying to work out player motivation an emotion is MMOs, I think I've not managed to get a nice spread to characters in Warcraft between level 1 and 80 (the top level). In my first efforts to learn how the social structures worked, I just worked to level to the top. This time around, I've spend a quarter of the time to get to the same point in the game, but have a 'better' character. Obviously I know a lot more now than I did the first time about the game, but more importantly, I use the… Continue

Infinity Blade comes to a device in your hand!

via Engadget App review: Infinity Blade

There's no denying that, as a game, Blade Infinity is limited. The storyline can be recited in a single sentence and the basic gameplay mechanic is one and the same throughout. However, it never feels like a trudge because of some spectacular presentation, RPG elements that have been woven in intelligently rather…

Warcraft - Learning how games make you think

As many may know - World of Warcraft (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com) has just released Cataclysm, the latest and greatest update to the massive multiplayer game, with over 12 million subscribers.

There is a lot to learn from Warcraft, if you are designing MUVEs for education. Inside the game, you'll find plenty of educators dressed as Priests, Warriors and Warlocks, so you might find it a strange place to think about learning more about… Continue

Virtual Worlds: When we say "across the curriculum" we mean RIGHT across the curriculum!

One of the many things that appeals to me about virtual worlds in education are the opportunities for use across a variety of curriculum areas. Our private OpenSim grid, Begonia Island, was opened to students in May 2010. Our first project was called TechnoSpirit and was developed as part of the Religion, Philosophy & Ethics program for our Year 8 Students. Our latest project, Planet Orbis, is quite different - a geometry unit as part of the Year 5 Extension Maths… Continue

Virtual Worlds in Primary Classrooms

Hi,I am a fairly new user of Second Life, and I love the endless possibilities that exist there. However, as a primary school teacher, I am wondering what options exist for children aged 7 -11 to engage in a virtual world similar to Second Life. There are so many amazing places to visit in Second Life that would be perfect for students studying certain themes etc, but of course, they are far too young to have accounts etc...What examples do people have of primary schools using virtual worlds -…See More
