My Interest in Virtual Worlds in Education

I completed my Quest Atlantis teacher training in November, 2008, and our school has been officially participating in the program since the start of 2009. Quest Atlantis has far exceeded the expectations of our staff and students.
Our school's Quest Atlantis blog can be found at http://myquestatlantis.edublogs.org/

The success of Quest Atlantis led me to look further into other virtual worlds, especially those suitable for our older students in the 13 and over age group. After exploring a number of different options, including Teen Second Life, I am currently conducting more detailed research into the possibility of a public space on ReactionGrid and also a private space managed by ReactionGrid. This space actually uses the OpenSim platform and will offer us great flexibility with our virtual worlds program.
A introductory post about the beginning of this project can be found on my blog.

I am *loving* exploring virtual worlds like Second Life for staff and student use. Participating in "in world" Professional Development such as sessions offered by ISTE, have been an exciting and worthwhile experiences.

My understanding is that Teen Second Life is only open to students from 13 years of age to 17. From 18 they can use the main Second Life grid. We looked carefully into this option for a project at our school and have been very impressed with the a...

Thanks for sharing this Judy, I hadn't seen DabbleBoard before and was keen to explore it! After watching the movie that you posted by Rich White, I visited his Smithsonian space on ReactionGrid to test the board. By going to a DabbleBoard page...

I work at a school where there is quite a conservative approach to curriculum. I am the “Staff ICT Trainer” and, unfortunately, I do not have classes of my own. When a great idea or opportunity presents itself, I have to find teachers who might be...

Ninja Physics on ReactionGrid

Science is definitely not my strong point, so when I saw Kyle G's tweet about Ninja Physics on ReactionGrid, I assumed it would be completely beyond me!

I attended Kyle's class on the Ninja sim where I spent about 30 minutes playing, learning and creating. The Ninja Physics concept allows users to create objects that move in the same way that they would in real life. At the momen… Continue

You need to look at something other than Second Life Stacy. Teen Grid is 13-18 - I suggest you look at Quest Atlantis for that age range, if you don't have resources/program to teach yet. Alternatively you might look at a game - as at that age the...
