Oh yes, prim building is so much fun, and really does help you understand SL and other grids better. I am not an expert builder, but love to teach and share what I have learned. I'm always glad to answer any questions. :)Here are a few suggestions for those who want to learn to build with prims.
My first suggestion is to go to the Ivory Tower of Prims in SL, and go through their self-guided learning tour-totally excellent! Gather the notecards, see the demos, and then go to a good sandbox to practice. Dreams and Crackerbox school have great sandboxes.
Second suggestion is to get a big supply of freebie textures to use in building. Yadni's Junkyard and Sara Nerd have tons. Dreams sandbox has a wonderful selection on the walls near the building on the right back wall as you enter the sandbox.
Third, find the great Dreams stand-and-click-through tutorial boards. Dreams has them set up as well as Crackerbox sandbox, and my Greenetree Tutorials. Practice building while reading these.
Fourth-Attend classes! There are many free classes at all times of day in SL. Just use Search/Events/Education menu to find them. And get some free tutorials to build at your own pace. Crackerbox and my place have a picture frame tutorial from Xerses Goff, and my Alpha Pets and Plants boxed tutorial as freebies. Also be an observer. Watch the prims change as you do these tutorials. Edit builds you like, and see how they were made.
And finally, watch some of the wonderful videos on the web such as Robby Dingo's "Watch the World" about actually building Van Gogh's Starry Night on You Tube. Amazing and moving!

And Torley Linden's excellent tutorials!

Have fun building!
