Why Second Classroom?

We know that the academic and social well being of our students is enhanced when the learning environment provides spaces where students can learn in different ways, at different speeds, and where they feel safe and valued. We also know that the changes that 21st century learning has brought to the ways our teachers teach and students learn are momentous.

Join in the discussions and reflections to help take learning and teaching to the new frontiers of virtual learning. The Second Classroom aims to support students and teachers with opportunities to strive for creativity, knowledge, citizenship, global awareness and personal success in virtual learning environments.

Blended Delivery SL and F2F classrooms

I just thought I'd post a link to a paper presented at ASCILTE 2010 in Sydney recently - about Blended Learning using Second Life. You might find it of interest.

Repeating myself

In trying to work out player motivation an emotion is MMOs, I think I've not managed to get a nice spread to characters in Warcraft between level 1 and 80 (the top level). In my first efforts to learn how the social structures worked, I just worked to level to the top. This time around, I've spend a quarter of the time to get to the same point in the game, but have a 'better' character. Obviously I know a lot more now than I did the first time about the game, but more importantly, I use the… Continue

Jo Kay at ISTE SIGVE Speaker Session December 21!

At a blog post at Oh!VirtualLearning! I announced that we will experiment tomorrow night, Dec. 21, in Elluminate, sharing my desktop from my laptop in Nashville, TN while logged into Second Life as Scottmerrick Oh to benefit from spending an hour with Jo Kay. If that's not a run-on sentence I never read one.

Please join us if you can. It will be a memorable hour, and if all the technology cooperates we'll have…

Infinity Blade comes to a device in your hand!

via Engadget App review: Infinity Blade

There's no denying that, as a game, Blade Infinity is limited. The storyline can be recited in a single sentence and the basic gameplay mechanic is one and the same throughout. However, it never feels like a trudge because of some spectacular presentation, RPG elements that have been woven in intelligently rather…

Warcraft - Learning how games make you think

As many may know - World of Warcraft (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com) has just released Cataclysm, the latest and greatest update to the massive multiplayer game, with over 12 million subscribers.

There is a lot to learn from Warcraft, if you are designing MUVEs for education. Inside the game, you'll find plenty of educators dressed as Priests, Warriors and Warlocks, so you might find it a strange place to think about learning more about… Continue

Virtual Worlds in Primary Classrooms

Hi,I am a fairly new user of Second Life, and I love the endless possibilities that exist there. However, as a primary school teacher, I am wondering what options exist for children aged 7 -11 to engage in a virtual world similar to Second Life. There are so many amazing places to visit in Second Life that would be perfect for students studying certain themes etc, but of course, they are far too young to have accounts etc...What examples do people have of primary schools using virtual worlds -…See More
